Tree Surgeon’s Organise Donation for Tree Planting on the Mendip Hills

Mendip Trees and Landscapes (MTL) Ltd has organised a donation of £1100 for the Mendip Hills Fund to go towards new tree planting in the area.

The tree surgeons had a large pile of ash that had been felled and could go for fire wood. Members of the public were allowed to take it but asked to make a donation to the Mendip Hills Fund. The fund supports local environmental projects in the area and is run by the Mendip Hills AONB Partnership and Somerset Community Foundation.

Woodland cover across the Mendip Hills AONB is 12% (2376 hectares). The AONB Partnership would like to increase this to 13.5% (2664 hectares) to help the national drive for planting more trees in order to help address climate change and help nature recover. Tree planting is one important tool in fighting climate change and can be beneficial for wildlife but it’s essential this is done using the right tree in the right place. Joe Taylor from MTL said, ‘It’s great that we can help a local environmental cause like this. Sadly we spend a lot of time cutting down ash trees that are suffering from ash dieback. It’s going to be even more difficult to increase tree cover as we’re losing so many ash trees. The Mendip Hills seem to be suffering very badly from ash dieback.’
