Habitat management for Mendip Dormice Phase 2
Project: The hazel dormouse is one of the Mendip Hills’ Champion Species and is regularly monitored as part of the national dormouse monitoring program. There has been a distinct decline in numbers over the last decade, echoing the decline recorded on a national level.
Somerset Wildlife Trust, in partnership with local farmers, Longleat Estate, PTES and Avon Wildlife Trust are leading an ambitious project to stop the decline of hazel dormice by improving habitat quality and connectivity in historically important hotspots for dormice in Mendip. The project will also improve understanding of where remnant populations remain and will increase awareness of the value of habitat corridors and woodland management for a range of wildlife.
Some of the activities being funded are ride widening to create linear corridors of scrubby habitat, hedgerow planting, deer fencing, selective coppicing, footprint tunnel surveys and training days.
