The 2019 intake of Mendip Hills AONB Young Rangers have a new uniform thanks to a generous donation from The Mendip Society. The Young Rangers put their new water proofs and thermal layers to the test during their Outdoor First Aid course.
The Mendip Society, a membership organisation who care for the hills, kindly donated £500 to help with the costs of new waterproofs, thermal baselayers and backpacks for all 15 Young Rangers. Their programme runs across two years bringing local young people aged 11-13 together who have a passion for the outdoors, nature and all things Mendip. They meet every month to take part in real life countryside ranger experiences. They will also be working towards the John Muir Conservation Award.
In November the Young Rangers covered outdoor first aid, learning how to deliver CPR, stop bleeding and using a defibrillator. The sessions was based around real life scenarios forcing the rangers to problem solve and think about how the emergency services might reach them in remote locations. There was a lot of laughs dressing each other up in bandages and keeping warm in the group shelters. The instructors, ex-paramedics from the air ambulance and Hazardous Area Response Team, drew on their real-life experiences allowing the reality of a first aid situation to hit home.
Lauren Holt, Mendip Hills AONB Ranger Volunteer Coordinator, said ‘Seeing the Young Rangers in their bright red uniforms for the first-time representing Mendip Hills AONB as young ambassadors was heart warming. Thank you again to Mendip Society for sponsoring their fabulous new kit, our Young Rangers are very grateful. You certainly won’t miss them. The conditions out there on the hills can be unforgiving which is why we teach our Young Rangers first aid outside to practice these skills in their training and they need kit to keep them warm as well.’
