Would you like to become an ambassador for the Mendip Hills and join our prestigious team of Volunteer Rangers?
Join us for an online open evening on Thursday 14th January to hear about how to become a prestigious AONB Volunteer Ranger.
The open evening will provide more detail about the role and the comprehensive 12 month training programme, and will be an opportunity to meet current Volunteer Rangers.

Booking for the Open Evening is essential, and ticket sales for this free event will close at 7pm on 13th January. A hyperlink to the event, which will be hosted on MS Teams, will be emailed to the attendees on the day of the event.
Volunteer Rangers provide a visible presence in the Mendip Hills AONB and assist the AONB Unit in conserving, enhancing and promoting the appropriate use and enjoyment of the area. Volunteer Rangers have been integral to Mendip Hills AONB since 1987 and Volunteer Rangers inspire and inform visitors, lead guided walks, marshal events, check walking routes and are the ‘eyes and ears’ of the AONB Team.
The role requires a minimum commitment of 7 hours per month and at the end of the year-long induction programme, role holders will have undergone Outdoor First Aid, navigation, countryside interpretation and emergency situation training as well as learning about the wildlife and history of the area.
Volunteer Rangers are involved in a wide variety of work, they visit popular sites, lead guided walks, marshal events, check walk routes and are the ‘eyes and ears’ of the AONB Unit. They are provided with a water-proof jacket and other uniform plus travel expenses are covered. The volunteers are also given exclusive benefits such as talks delivered by local experts, trips to areas not open to the public and involvement in project work.
Lauren Holt, Ranger Volunteer Coordinator said, ‘The open evening will be a chance to hear about how to become a Volunteer Ranger and more about the role, plus there will be the opportunity to meet current Volunteer Rangers, ask questions and learn more about the Volunteer Ranger training and induction programme. The programme is also a natural progression for existing volunteers to join in order to grow their skills and help to look after this unique piece of the country.’
Places on the Volunteer Ranger programme are limited and subject to a selection process. Interested applicants will be invited to apply following the open evening. Booking is essential and available via our website Events – Mendip Hills AONB. If you have any queries or would like any more additional information please contact
