One-off outdoor gallery set to transform Cheddar Gorge

On the evening of Sunday 22nd October there will be an exciting chance to experience a one-off art exhibition projected onto the rock faces in Cheddar Gorge.

The outdoor gallery will unveil a unique series of images by photographic artist Elizabeth Woodger, along with photos taken by the public, showcasing the special qualities that make the Mendip Hills an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

The event is free for the public to attend and part of the Mendip Rocks! festival of geology. The start point is the Riverside Gardens opposite the Christmas Shop, with the gallery running along a 500 metre stretch to above Gough’s Cave, with a road closure in place. It will take place between 6:30pm and 8:30pm on the evening of Sunday 22nd October.

Tim Haselden, Mendip Hills AONB Project Development Officer, said:
“We’re so excited to be delivering this event to promote why the Mendip Hills AONB is so special in a way we’ve not done before. To make the event safe, accessible, and enjoyable, we’re pleased to be able to close the road through the Gorge whilst the projections take place. Cheddar Gorge is really important for wildlife, especially bats, so we’ve carefully planned the event to make sure that they won’t be impacted.”

Photographic artist, Elizabeth Wooder, said:
“I’ve had an amazing summer exploring the Mendip Hills with my family. We’ve hiked over 150km and my children have had their first caving experience. Soon, the photographs I’ve made will be projected onto the rock faces at Cheddar Gorge, and given my background in geology, this is quite literally a dream come true!”

The project is led by the Mendip Hills AONB Service in partnership with Somerset Earth Science Centre, Somerset Film, The Mendip Society, and Windrose Rural Media Trust, and has been commissioned by Seed Sedgemoor Arts Council England’s Creative People and Places programme. The project has also been supported by Cheddar Parish Council, Longleat Enterprises Ltd, the National Trust, Somerset Council, the Wells & Mendip Museum, and 18a Productions Limited.
